Maria Paviour's Optimism Consulting is a specialist human capital intelligence consultancy founded in 1994 by Maria Paviour — registered Occupational Psychologist, neuroscientist, and internationally recognised thought leader in workplace wellbeing and performance.
Maria established the business on a conviction that has guided three decades of research and innovation: that what is right for people is also what works for organisations. Drawing on neuroscience and occupational psychology, she developed the frameworks, tools and methodologies that underpin everything we do — including the Cari® Human Capital Intelligence platform and the NeuChem® model of neuroscience-based coaching.
Today, Maria leads a team of specialists helping organisations build the conditions for high performance. Our work makes the measurable business case for healthy, engaged people — translating complex science into strategy that delivers real, quantifiable return on investment, with typical ROI of at least 1:5.
Everything we offer traces back to the research and innovation of our founder, Maria Paviour. Over 30 years, Maria — a registered Occupational Psychologist and neuroscientist — has developed a suite of proprietary frameworks and platforms that set us apart from generalist consultancies.
Cari® (Commitment and Resilience Index) is Maria's flagship innovation: the UK's first digital workplace wellbeing technology, originally developed in 1997 and continuously evolved ever since. Now a fully AI-enhanced Human Capital Intelligence platform, Cari provides rich organisational data to measure wellbeing, engagement and performance — giving leaders the evidence base to make smarter, more targeted people investment decisions.
NeuChem® Coaching is Maria's proprietary model of neuroscience-based executive and individual coaching. Grounded in applied neuroscience, NeuChem® helps individuals understand and direct their own brain chemistry — building resilience, restoring confidence, and enabling sustainable high performance. It has been applied with thousands of clients over the past decade.
Built on these foundations, our consultancy services span people strategy, executive and leader development, culture evolution, management development, and career progression.
As a registered Occupational Psychologist and neuroscientist with over 30 years of research, innovation and practice, Maria brings a rare combination of scientific rigour and real-world strategic experience. She is regularly sought as a speaker and commentator on:

Staff from BME backgrounds and other protected characteristic groups reported significant issues with bullying, harassment and discrimination.
Maria Paviour's team deployed Cari® to support an ambitious programme of operational and cultural change, providing confidential wellbeing consultations to all 8,000 staff and delivering targeted NeuChem® coaching and resilience workshops.
